Lyric Hearing Aid

Lyric, the world’s first completely invisible hearing device, is a fantastic option for those of us that are cosmetically minded. It provides wonderful sound quality in a discreet and virtually individual package.
However, Lyric is not always right for every hearing aid candidate. There are a number of contraindications, or reasons, why Lyric cannot be fit on certain individuals. If you inquire about Lyric during your hearing aid consultation, your hearing healthcare professional will go over these contraindications with you to determine if Lyric is the right choice for you. Some of the things that may keep you from being able to wear the device are:

  • Amount and type of hearing loss
  • Shape and anatomy of the ear canal
  • Lifestyle (i.e., swimmers, scuba divers)
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Ear drainage, ear infections
  • Compromised immune system
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Certain skin conditions
  • ANY history of radiation to head and neck

In certain situations, even if your hearing healthcare provider thinks that you are the perfect candidate for Lyric, you may still be contraindicated if you have excessive problems once the aid has been inserted into your ear. Some individuals experience ear pain, bloody ear canals, or excessive wax buildup upon insertion. If this is the case, you may be instructed to wait a couple of weeks before getting another aid inserted. If problems persist, you may ultimately be contraindicated.
Lyric is an exciting improvement when it comes to hearing aids, however, it is imperative to have an in depth conversation with your hearing healthcare provider in order to determine if the device is right for you.

Why hearing aids work for some and not for others

As hearing healthcare professionals, we hear stories all the time from our patients about how they know someone that had hearing aids and never wore them because they were unhappy with them. Or how they know someone that had a specific kind of hearing aid and they want the exact same one because the person that they know is so satisfied with their hearing aids. Or maybe they are concerned about why they are not getting the same benefit as someone else that wears the same kind of hearing aids. The list goes on and on!

The reality is that there are a number of reasons why hearing aids work for some and not for others. Why some people are satisfied and why some people are not. Why some people wear their hearing aids and why some do not. The most obvious reason that some people perceive better success with hearing aids than others is due to the amount and type of hearing loss. Simply put, some hearing losses are easier to fit than others. In addition,  to determining the amount and type of hearing loss, your hearing healthcare professional will perform a test of your word understanding capabilities. We use this score to determine how well we think you will do with hearing aids. The higher the score, the better benefit you theoretically should get. But, to make matters more muddled, even if you have the easiest hearing loss to fit and excellent word understanding scores, if you are not motivated to wear hearing aids, if you do not have the support of family and friends to assist you through the hearing aid process, if you have poor dexterity that makes it difficult to insert the aids or change the batteries, or if your expectations are unrealistic, your experience with hearing aids will probably not be as positive as someone else’s.

Lastly, the knowledge of the individual programming and adjusting your hearing aids is of utmost importance. Your hearing aids will only be as good as the person that is programming them. Do your research. Be prepared and get the motivation that you need to have a pleasant hearing aid experience. The more you know, the better chance you have of having realistic expectations that will enable you to make positive hearing healthcare decisions.

ReSound Releases Alera™ Extensions

Alera Remote Microphone

“Every few years, technology takes a significant leap forward,” said Laurel A. Christensen, Chief Audiology Officer, ReSound. “Alera gives you new surround sound technology that provides crisper, cleaner, more natural sound and improves hearing in even the most difficult listening environments.”

The latest updates to Alera, in the Remote Microphone model, take advantage of natural directivity afforded by the pinna and external ear. By allowing the natural ear to collect, direct and amplify sound waves, Alera provides better capabilities for speech recognition than any other hearing aid product.

With the Remote Microphone located in the concha, sound moves naturally through the folds and whorls of the ear, meaning that the listener can better locate sounds that come from behind and more easily identify the source of the sound. The Remote Microphone also provides significant wind noise reduction benefits.

The configurable Alera BTE provides both standard and power options for patients. This revolutionary behind-the-ear design combines a standard power and a high power hearing instrument in one product. It is the only Standard BTE that can easily be converted to a very small high power instrument, with one housing for both. The BTE provides patients with an adaptable hearing instrument solution should their hearing change over time.

“The configurable BTE has the highest directivity index of any other hearing aid,” said Christensen. “Optimal directional processing has been shown as the single most important way to provide better hearing ability in background noise.”

With this addition of Alera Remote Microphone and the Alera BTE to the ReSound Alera™ line, there is an Alera solution that will fit 90% of patients – addressing mild to profound hearing losses. Both new models also feature wireless connections to TV, stereo and telephones for convenience and optimal listening experience.
