Questions To Ask A Professional When Purchasing Hearing Aids

When considering the purchase of hearing aids, it is important to do your research and go into the process prepared. Your hearing healthcare professional will ask you a number of questions in order to determine what size, style and technology level will be best for you. However, to get the most out of your hearing healthcare experience, it is pertinent to ask your provider a few questions of your own. A few key questions that every client needs to ask when considering hearing aids are listed below:

1. What hearing aid features would be the most useful to me?

2. What style and size hearing aid would be best for me?

3. What problems or concerns might I experience when getting accustomed to my hearing aids?

4. If I start out with one style and manufacturer and am unsatisfied, can I switch to another? If so, how long do I have to make this decision?

5. What are the charges for the hearing evaluation, dispensing fee(s), and future servicing and repair?

6. Is there a trial period and if so, what are the policies?

7. What fees are refundable if you return the hearing aid(s) during the trial period?

8. What warranty coverage is provided for the hearing aids?

9. What is included in the purchase price of the aids (i.e., office visits, servicing, repairs, hearing evaluations, batteries, etc)?

10. What do I need to do at the end of my warranty period to continue coverage of my hearing aids?

5 Signs You Need To Take A Hearing Test

Are you noticing you that you might not be hearing as well as you used to be?  Because hearing loss can happen gradually over many years, you may not know if your hearing has suffered. Here are a few signs that it may be time to take a hearing test.

  1. You hear people talking, but you have a hard time understanding what is being said.  Many people complain that it’s just harder to tell what is being said. You may find yourself asking friends to repeat themselves or find yourself responding to them by saying, ‘huh?’
  2. You have a hard time hearing on the telephone or notice that the television or radio is turned up louder than what’s comfortable to others. You may find yourself adjusting the volume on your phone in order to help you hear.
  3. When you have a hearing loss, you may find yourself not wanting to participate in activities you once enjoyed. When you can’t understand people, it may seem more like work to go to the movies or spend time with friends and family.
  4. You have a hard time understanding women and children’s voice. Often our hearing is damaged first in the higher frequencies. If you find that you are having a hard time understanding certain people it may be because you have a hearing loss.
  5.  Have ringing in your ears, also known as tinnitus. Ringing in your ears can be a sign of hearing loss. It may sound like hissing, buzzing or ringing.

If you have noticed any of these signs, it may be time for a hearing test. Visit a hearing professional near you to find out for sure.
